You hit delete in your AI writing assistant. The text disappears from your screen. But on the backend, most tools—ChatGPT, Claude, Jasper, Copy.ai, Writesonic—store your prompt history, your edits, and your deleted paragraphs for anywhere from 30 days to indefinitely. OpenAI keeps chat data for 30 days after deletion unless you opt out via API settings. Anthropic retains prompts for abuse monitoring. Jasper and Copy.ai store conversation logs on AWS or Google Cloud with retention policies that aren’t always surfaced in the UI.
This isn’t malicious—it’s how session management, abuse detection, and model fine-tuning work at scale. But if you’re drafting sensitive client work, subscriber data summaries, or anything under NDA, you need to know what gets kept and where. Some tools let you purge history manually. Others require a support ticket. A few—Notion AI, for example—tie deletion to workspace-level data policies you don’t control if you’re on a team plan. The gap between “I deleted this” and “the server deleted this” can be weeks, and the gap between “the server deleted this” and “the backup deleted this” can be longer.

The trick is knowing when the cost of a fresh start is lower than the cost of degraded output.
